Belted Kingfishers

These birds are extremely wary of human presence and difficult to get close to. As the summer goes on they will begin feeding their young and teaching them how to fish by stunning a fish against their perch and dropping it into the water so their young can learn to catch them. Their "machine gun" like call is unmistakable and they will use it before flying in to catch a fish.

My favorite bird Nathan! Thanks for the wonderful images that made lunch at my desk a little brighter.

Fantastic shots! I've encountered a Belted kingfisher at the Coon Rapids Dam Park. They are wary of people, and a 300mm lens is not long enough to reach them. Still, fun to watch - I'll just admire your shots.

Thank you :) Kingfishers nest in the side of tall banks...many times along rivers. If you are around the dam again look for baseball/softball sized holes near the top of the bank. They burrow several feet into the side of the bank in order to nest. Around here the young kingfishers should be showing up any time.
