Aurora borealis also know as Northern Lights were visible last week along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Here is a image from a quick trip I made to try to catch them before they were gone.

Coyote Pounce

Coyotes use their large ears to hear small mammals underneath the snow. Once they pinpoint their prey they will pounce and in deep snow they may disappear altogether.

Northern Hawk Owl

Hawk owls are generally rare in Minnesota but a few regularly visit during the winter months. Unlike most owls they hunt their prey (mice, voles, lemmings) during the day.

Coyote On Ice

This coyote was part of pack of three individuals. They were returning just before dark to a deer they had killed previously. This coyote was the first to return with the other two following too far behind to photograph.

Nature Conservancy Habitat Banner

The Nature Conservancy recently chose one of my images from Bluestem Prairie to be used as a banner for habitat preservation. The image is a native prairie wildflower known as Blazing Star (Liatris spicata).

Osprey With Fish

This was an image I came across more or less by accident. The osprey made several attempts at catching a crappie before it was successful.

I have been traveling for a while and have been away from the computer. Here are a few images from the summer I thought I would share.

Belted Kingfishers

These birds are extremely wary of human presence and difficult to get close to. As the summer goes on they will begin feeding their young and teaching them how to fish by stunning a fish against their perch and dropping it into the water so their young can learn to catch them. Their "machine gun" like call is unmistakable and they will use it before flying in to catch a fish.

Spring Black Bear

This is a young male black bear that was spending some time in a tree to eat the fresh buds that were just beginning to show. The bear was wild and very tolerant of my presence.

Orchids & Primates

The Como Zoo and Conservatory has an award winning collection of orchids that can be visited throughout the year. Here are two species that were in bloom during one of my visits. Also, a few images of primates from the trip. Barbara O. was nice enough to give me her spot to take some of these photos of the Orangutans during a crowded time of the day.

Emperor Tamarins

Como Zoo has a family of Emperor Tamarins that just had newborns. They are typically born as twins as was the case with these two. The young are taken care of primarily by the oldest male who will also teach the younger males how to properly care for the young. All the males, father or not, help with the birth, care, and support of the young, carrying them and bringing them to the mother to nurse. At approximately three months they are weaned, and toward the end of the second year they are fully mature. The Emperor Tamarin's life expectancy is over 15 years. You can see the two youngest Tamarins clinging to the back of the dominant male in the group.

Recently I began a project working with Como Zoo in St. Paul Minnesota to photograph their plants and animals. The photographs taken will be used in variety of ways but the main purpose is to help generate funds to support the animals and build them new and improved enclosures.

White Mountains

Several photos from a recent trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Most of the photos were taken while flying in a small airplane just after a heavy snow fall. Logging roads are visible winding through the forest in several of the images.

Foxes of the North Shore

A few red foxes allowed me to photograph them during a fall trip to the north shore of Lake Superior. One of them eventually came over and started chewing on my boot...it was a first for me. They seemed fairly young to me.

North Shore Foliage

The foliage along the north shore of Lake Superior was at its height in mid October and was some of the best that had been seen in recent years. Posted are some images from a few of my favorite spots along the shore.

Tree Swallows Skimming

Just as the ice was beginning to come off the lakes these swallows were skimming the open water near shore. It was a behavior I had never seen before but one that others have said is typical for Tree Swallows. I still am unsure if they were drinking or eating.

Wetland Spring

Spring in Minnesota means lots of birds returning to the wetlands. These photos were taken early in the morning in central Minnesota while the birds were still passing through. There are only a few weeks of the year when numerous species are passing through and are in their breeding plumage. It is also the time of year when Red-winged Blackbirds will display their red wing patches while trying to attract females.

Prairie Chicken Booming Grounds

Every spring Prairie Chickens dance, fight and "boom" in effort to impress the girls. It is a special experience that you can witness at a number of places in Minnesota. You have to get up early and sit in the cold but it can be amazing.

Wilson's Plovers

I came across a large group of Wilson's Plovers in the middle of a prairie in western Minnesota. These birds are not very common to the area and it was my first chance to photograph them. They were gathered around a large flooded area and were busy feeding. They have an unusual feeding behavior where they swim around in circles in order to stir food up from the bottom. The females are the more colorful of the two sexes.

Ice Eagles

After hearing from some fisherman that there were several Bald Eagles that had been stealing their fish while they were inside their ice house I went to wait for them. After about an hour of waiting two adult and one juvenile eagle showed up and made their way to the pile of fish outside the house on the ice. They eat fish very fast if you didn't know...I didn't.

Black Bear Cubs

These Black Bear cubs had just come out of their den in early spring. A friend came across them and brought me to them. You can see the hole to their den just below them. They were very young and very small. There was actually a third cub who was climbing around on the dead tree that was covering their den. We were not sure where mom was so it was a very brief encounter and I was not comfortable for one moment of it.

Trumpeter Swans

Once eliminated from Minnesota due to hunting, Trumpeter Swans have been reintroduced with great success. Pairs of swans defend large territories and are very vocal.

These swans were taking advantage of the little bit of open water that was available to them just before spring and spent most of their time chasing each other around the ice.

Barred Owl

This was a special winter/spring day when I had the chance to sit with a Barred Owl and watch a great sunset. As the streams began to open up one revealed a young deer who didn't make it.
